What is SIDS?

In the United States, about 2,300 apparently healthy babies pass away suddenly and without explanation each year. This phenomenon, known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS, can understandably cause parents a great deal of stress. While the cause is still unknown, steps such as breastfeeding, using a prone sleeping position, and maintaining a smoke-free environment can mitigate the risk for your child.

Each year, there are about 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) in the United States. These deaths occur among infants less than 1 year old and have no immediately obvious cause.

The three commonly reported types of SUID include the following:

  • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
  • Unknown cause.
  • Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.

In 2020, there were about 1,389 deaths due to SIDS, about 1,062 deaths due to unknown causes, and about 905 deaths due to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.

Steps to Prevent SIDS

A middle ear infection can be painful and traumatic for your child, so prevention is the best method.

Monitoring

Monitor your baby’s sleep and environment for any sudden changes.

Sleep Position

The supine position (laying on the back) is recommended for babies until 1 year of age.

Smoke-fee Surroundings

Maintain a smoke-fee environment to protect your baby’s health.

Maternal Bond

Consider breastfeeding when possible, as it can contribute to bonding and provide a sense of security for your baby.

Infection Vigilance

Be mindful of colds and other illnesses, especially during seasons when the RS virus is prevalent.

Optimal Bedding

Choose suitable bedding, avoid clutter, and ensure a safe sleep environment.
